Issue: Mary’s Law

Mary’s Law is a short series of action items for towns, villages and cities in Marathon County that will lead to the development of a countywide Humane Office Program. The action items are as follows:

  1. Raise your municipality’s pet license fees to $10 per spayed or neutered animal and $20 per unaltered animal for 2013.
  2. Formulate a plan for reminding people to pay their annual pet license fees and for collecting those fees in the Spring of 2013.
  3. Contact the Marathon County Animal Control Task Force or Deputy County Administrator Deb Hager and let them know your municipality is interested in participating in the countywide Humane Officer Program tentatively scheduled to begin on July 1, 2013.

Marathon County dispatch receives nearly 2,000 calls annual on pet-related matters. Working together we can hire 3.00 FTE positions to provide humane officer and dog catcher services from 9:00 a.m. to  10:00 p.m. seven days per week with limited after hours services for emergencies.

The conceptual framework for this program was developed by the Wausau Animal Control & Welfare Subcommittee working in conjunction with the Village of Weston. Questions can be directed to Subcommittee Chairperson Keene Winters at 715-675-0060.
